The Harlington Area Schools Trust (HAST) was created on 1 September 2008 to facilitate collaboration and partnership across the schools within the Harlington Upper School pyramid. Eleven schools have membership at present including the three schools where the Hearing Impairment provision is based. HAST membership is also given to partners from the local education sector, including Central Bedfordshire College, the University of Bedfordshire and the Education Business Partnership. Our partners bring significant support and expertise to the Trust agenda. History of HAST HAST has grown out of the collaboration amongst pyramid schools and their partnership in services such as the Hearing Impairment provision. The Governing Bodies of the schools believe that the creation of a Trust formalises their relationship and provides a sustainable organisation that transcends personalities. HAST's declared vision is "to provide an exciting and innovative collaborative approach to teaching, learning and governance, in order to ensure that every child in the HAST family receives an excellent well-rounded education from age 3 to 19". Since its creation, HAST has worked to develop projects which raise standards in teaching, learning and pastoral care across the pyramid and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of business management and procurement within the schools. Although not all lower schools are yet members of HAST, they remain committed to and active in HAST projects. Commissioned Services HAST has been commissioned to run the Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment and Medical Needs Teaching services on behalf of Central Bedfordshire Council, and more details on each of these services can be found on the relevant tab on this website. All staff employed by HAST are subject to HAST's safeguarding policies and procedures, with relevant pre-employment checks carried out as required, and CRB/DBS certificates are held by all staff. Click here for HAST's Safeguarding Policy Why HAST? HAST is run by the schools for the schools with tight governance and is able to respond swiftly to changing needs and the new challenges they may bring. There are regular meetings of Heads, Business Managers, SENCOs, IT co-ordinators and safeguarding leads, each group working together to develop common approaches and enhance teaching, learning and pastoral care across all the schools. The HAST Board consults with the schools to identify areas of concern, and where possible works with them to find solutions. For example, a number of schools have experienced difficulties in recruiting teaching staff, so HAST has recently provided funding to enable schools to offer recruitment or retention incentives to teachers. The Trust was founded in part to act as a provider of services to the pyramid and will operate as employer and manager for those services. HAST has recently appointed a Speech and Language Therapist who will work primarily with the Hearing Impairment services, but also with non-hearing impaired pupils in the HAST schools, and the Trust is now considering providing other specialist support services such as educational psychology or counselling. The Trust can also look to its external partners to bring additional expertise to the development of innovative solutions to these challenges. ?
